CASTLETON, Vt. – Presque Isle native Chad Lavway came within an out of a no-hitter in the second game and Husson College teammate James Gray pitched a two-hitter in the first to lead the Braves past Castleton State College 9-1 and 6-1 Sunday in baseball action.

In the second game, Shawn Horvath’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh as the only hit off Lavway, who gave up just one walk while notching nine strikeouts. Jason Harvey, Chris McInnis, and Brian McGinley each had two singles and an RBI.

In the first game, Justin Spencer went 4-for-4 with three doubles, a single and one RBI for Husson. Andrew Patterson had two singles and two RBIs while Jeff Miller had three singles and an RBI.

Adam Massey and Shawn Horvath each hit a single for the Spartans.

UMF, Elms split

At Holyoke, Mass., Ben Saviello threw a complete game allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts to lead the University of Maine-Farmington by Elms College 5-1 Saturday.

Elms defeated UMF in the first game 1-0.

In the first game, Corey Provencher, Aaron Wolfe, Chip Burnham, and Greg Melanson each had a single for the Beavers.

In the second game, Provencher hit three singles and had an RBI. Tom Danylik had an RBI double, while Turner and Melanson each added RBI singles for UM-Farmington.

At Keene, NH, Ben Muniz hit a ninth inning home run to lead Saint Joseph’s College by Keene State in the second game 5-4.

St. Joseph’s won the first game 9-5.

In the first game, Dustin Spiller had three hits for the Monks while Luke Enman added two hits.

In the second game, Keil Martin hit a three run home run in the sixth to tie the game for the Monks.

Colby, Trinity split pair

At Waterville Saturday, Andy Carr had two doubles and a single to lead Colby College to a 10-8 victory in the first game, but Trinity College came back for a 12-8 win in the second.

In the first game, Kyle McKay went 3-for-3 with three singles. Robert Rosenbaum got the win in relief for Colby.

Guy Gogliettino led Trinity with a double and a single.

In the second game, Sean Killeen had a double and three singles to pace Trinity. Matt Stafford and Gogliettino each had had three hits. Stafford had a double and two home runs while Gogliettino had a homer and two singles.

Tom Salemy had a double and three singles for Colby.

Saint Joseph’s, Castleton split

At Castleton, Vt., Saturday, the Saint Joseph’s College Monks won the first game 11-4, but couldn’t solve Castleton State College starter Jeremy Gilcris in the second as Castleton won 3-2.

In the second game, Dustin Spiller had had three singles to lead the Monks’ 14-hit attack. Luke Enman had a triple, a single and three RBIs.

Tony Dipietrantonio led Castleton State with two singles.

In the first game, Phil Puleo and Shawn Horvath each had two hits. Horvath had a double and an RBI.

Thomas splits with Becker

At Leicester, Mass., Saturday, Becker College topped Thomas College of -Waterville 4-3 in the first game, but the visiting Terriers came up with two runs in the top of the seventh to win the second 4-2.

In the first game, Keith Renaud led the offense with a double and a single, but he also led Becker on the mound by scattering eight hits over five innings and holding the Terriers off. Cory Shepherd had two singles.

Tim Mercier had a double, a single and one RBI for Thomas. Matt Pavlis had a double and a single.

In the second game, Nick Schauwecker singled twice and drove in a run to pace the Terriers.

Russell Beckwith, Jordan Stebbins, and Mercier each had two hits. All the hits, other than a Mercier double, were singles.

Kevin Renaud had two singles and a steal for Becker.

Becker takes two from UMF

At Leicester, Mass., Sunday, Joe DeLuca hit two home runs and doubled to lead Becker College past the University of Maine-Farmington 7-6 and 8-3.

In the first game, Keith Renaud, Kevin Renaud and Devin Caron each had two hits for Becker. All were singles except for a home run by Kevin Renaud.

Pete McLaughlin of Benton led the UMF Beavers hit a solo homer and singled.

In the second game, Kevin Renaud and Caron each doubled and singled while Cory Shepherd and Roger Graham each singled twice.

Jacob Turner of Jay paced UMF with a double, a single, and three RBIs.

USM splits with W. Connecticut

At Gorham Saturday, the University of Southern Maine Huskies rallied in the final two innings to win the second game and salvage a split against Western Connecticut State University. The WCSU Colonials won the first game 5-1.

In the second game, RBI singles by Eddie Skeffington and Max Arsenault in the eighth provided the winning margin for the Huskies. Arsenault led the way with three singles and three RBIs.

Mike Perper led WCSU with three singles and two RBIs. Andy Powers, Ryan Gorra, Patrick Kantor and Ryan Koschmeider each had two hits for the Colonials.

In the first game, Zane Honious pitched a two-hitter to clamp down on USM’s offense and earn the win.

Gorra led the offense with two singles.

One of USM’s two hits was Nick Vardaro’s triple.

At Waterville, Nikki Smith pitched a three-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts to lead Thomas by Lesley 4-0 in the second game Saturday.

Thomas defeated Lesley in the first game 3-2.

In the first game, Kayla Beaudoin had a double, two singles and an RBI for the Terriers. Joy Ireland allowed two runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts.

In the second game, Beaudoin had a triple, a single and an RBI for Thomas. Mallory Thurston added a double with a run scored.

At Bangor, Carolyn McAvoy had a double, a single and an RBI to lead Husson College by Lasell College 10-2 in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader.

Lasell defeated Husson 9-0 in the second game.

In the first game, Jenny Rollins tripled while Jordon Pruett and Melissa Porter each doubled in the Eagles’ victory.

At Hartford, Conn., Beth Gostanian hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to lead Trinity College by Colby 5-4 in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Trinity defeated Colby 5-3 in the second game.

At Nashua, N.H., Saturday, Luke McPartlin scored four goals including three in the decisive third period to lead Maine Maritime Academy past Daniel Webster College in lacrosse action.

Nate Bolduc had two scores for the Mariners with the others coming from William Hood, John O’Malley, Brandon Hamilton and Garrett Lake. Rosco Bishop had 10 saves.

For Daniel Webster, Brandon Bell had three scores and Caleb Keay made 27 saves.
