Maine records sweep Menendez gets key hit in 10th

BALTIMORE – Freshman Danny Menendez stroked a two-run double in the 10th inning of the second game Sunday, lifting the University of Maine baseball team to a 6-4 victory and a sweep of Sunday’s America East doubleheader against Maryland Baltimore County at the Baseball Factory Field.

Coach Steve Trimper’s Black Bears, who won Sunday’s opener 16-7, improved to 17-9-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. The series was shortened to three games after Saturday’s doubleheader was rained out.

In Sunday’s finale, freshman Mike Powers of Portland and senior Troy Martin combined to scatter seven hits as the Bears improved to 6-0-1 in their last seven games.

Powers allowed five hits and three runs through six innings, then Martin (4-4) gave up only two hits and a run over the last four frames.

Brewer’s Joel Barrett led off the 10th win an infield single and Mark Ostrander singled to right. Curt Smith reached on a fielder’s choice, but a throwing error on the play left the bases loaded.

One out later, Menendez doubled down the left-field line to provide the winning margin.

McAvoy continued his torrid hitting, going 4-for-5 with a triple, a double, two singles and an RBI. Barrett finished with a solo home run (his fifth), a double and a single. Joe Hough singled twice.

Steve Bowen homered and knocked in three runs for UMBC (10-17, 0-3 AE).

The Bears had taken a 4-3 lead in the eighth when Smith was hit by a pitch, took third on McAvoy’s single and scored on a balk. The Retrievers tied it in the eighth when Mike Scheffel drew a one-out walk, went to third on Brian Moran’s double, and scored on Bowen’s sacrifice fly.

In Sunday’s opener, Quintal knocked in five runs with a double and a home run to spearhead UMaine’s 21-hit onslaught.

Matt McGraw stroked a solo home run, a double and a single, while freshman Billy Cather hit a double and two singles. Hough knocked in four runs with two homers, McAvoy smacked a homer and a single with three RBIs and Bobby Brown added two singles and two RBIs.

Barrett doubled and singled and Menendez singled twice.

Josh Zyskowski (1-0) earned the win despite allowing 10 hits and five runs in five innings.

The Bears broke open a 4-3 game by scoring nine times in the fifth inning.

McGraw led off with a single, then Barrett reached on an infield hit. Quintal followed with an RBI single. Two outs later, McAvoy cranked a two-run home run to left field.

Menendez rekindled the rally with a single, stole second, and scored on Brown’s double to left-center. Cather singled to center, setting the table for Hough’s three-run shot to center that chased UMBC starter Jon Pavlis (3-4).

Barrett greeted reliever Tom Schlein with a double, then Quintal doubled him home to give UMaine a 13-3 cushion.

Other key hits for the Bears included Hough’s solo homer in the third, RBI singles by McAvoy, Menendez, and Brown in the fourth, and Quintal’s three-run homer in the seventh.

Joe Fowler led the Retrievers with a homer, a double, and a single with two RBIs. Brian Moran added a double, two singles, and two RBIs.

In the Bears’ 9-4 victory Friday, senior righthander Scott Robinson struck out 16 batters to secure the victory.

UMaine returns to action with a three-day, four-game home series against Stony Brook that begins Thursday with a single 4 p.m. contest.
