BANGOR – Husson College baseball coach John Winkin said he was hoping freshman righthander Chris Pease of Hampden would have an impressive outing against the University of Maine-Presque Isle Wednesday that would “give him the confidence he needs.
“I think he has a lot of future talent,” noted Winkin.
Pease displayed that talent by throwing seven innings of three-hit shutout baseball to collect his first college win and his mates backed him with a 16-hit attack as Husson picked up a 14-0 non-conference win over the Owls at the Winkin Baseball Complex.
Pease, who had walked nine in 10 2/3 innings entering the game, didn’t have any control problems against the Owls as he walked just two and struck out six while throwing 59 strikes among his 85 pitches.
“My control is getting there. I haven’t thrown a lot this season,” said Pease. “I went mostly with my fastball today.”
UMPI junior third baseman and clean-up hitter Brian Morrison said Pease threw a “pretty good game. His fastball came across the plate pretty quick and he had a pretty good curveball.”
Freshman Gerry Worster retired all six men he faced to finish up for Pease.
Senior shortstop Jason Harvey and senior center fielder Justin Spencer paced Husson’s attack as Harvey went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in and Spencer went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Harvey raised his average to .469 and Spencer upped his average to .462.
“It was a windy day so we just concentrated on hitting line drives. We hit the ball pretty well and Pease did a good job pitching,” said Harvey.
Husson took a lead it would never relinquish with three runs in the first and the Eagles added four more in the second.
Chad Lavway’s slicing one-out, opposite-field triple to left started the first inning rally and Harvey walked and stole second.
Spencer then ripped an 0-2 pitch to left center off starter and losing pitcher Tyson Weeks to deliver both of them.
“He threw me a curve and it was up a little,” said Spencer, who eventually scored on an infield error.
Jeff Miller triggered the second-inning rally with a ground ball single to center and a balk by Weeks moved him to second.
Brian McGinley’s double to right center scored Miller; Danny White was hit by a pitch and Lavway laid down a bunt single to load the bases.
Harvey then roped a 2-2 pitch to left center to drive in two.
“He threw me a fastball on the inner half of the plate and I turned on it and put a good swing on it,” said Harvey.
Spencer’s single off the glove of diving shortstop Brandon Elie delivered Lavway.
Husson added two apiece in the fourth and sixth innings and three in the eighth.
Lavway and Andrew Patterson had two hits apiece for 15-8 Husson and Adam Sheehan knocked in three runs with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly.
Morrison’s triple and singles by Josh Biddington and Chris Carlton were the only hits for 4-7 UMPI.
