Soccer day camps

Blackbear United, a nonprofit organization, has announced dates for 2006 soccer day camps.

The day camps run 9-11:30 a.m. for boys and girls ages 6-14. Tuition for each camp is $150, including soccer ball, T-shirt and water bottle.

Blackbear United day camps focus on individual and group training with a nationally licensed coaching staff teaching the game of soccer in a positive learning environment.

. Spring Vacation Camp, April 17-20, Mahaney Dome, University of Maine campus, Orono.

. Bangor Day Camp, June 20-23.

. Mount Desert Island Day Camp, June 26-29.

. Lee Day Camp, Aug. 1-4.

Summer camp locations will be announced later this month.

Children’s Day bowlathon

HAMPDEN – The Hampden Children’s Day committee held a Bowlathon on March 18, to raise funds for Hampden Children’s Day 2006. The event drew eight teams and raised nearly $5,000. Participants were McK’s Variety, Edwards Shop ‘n Save, PDQ Door, the Rockin’ Rollers, Soccer Dads and Poor College Kids.

McK’s Variety swept almost all of the prizes in the various categories this year.

Individual winner with high three-string score, male, was Roger Blackmer, McK’s Variety.

Individual with high three-string score, female, was Judy Dauphinee, PDQ Door.

Team with the highest three-string score was McK’s Variety.

Individual pledge total, first place, was Ed McKenna, McK’s Variety.

Individual pledge total, second place, was Ron McKinnon, McK’s Variety.

Team with the highest pledge total was McK’s Variety.

The following businesses donated prizes for the event: Irving, Dysart’s, Fresh Ginger Restaurant, R&K Variety, the Warren Center, Webber Energy, Subway, Edwards Shop ‘n Save, Pat’s Pizza, Coffee Break Bakery and Margarita’s. The Sports Arena also donated prizes and the use of its facilities.

The Children’s Day committee is selling raffle tickets on an Old Town Otter kayak. The drawing will be held in conjunction with the Children’s Day fireworks on Saturday, Aug. 19. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Tickets are available at McK’s Variety, Hampden Hardware, Schacht’s True Value, Edwards Shop ‘n Save, TDS Telecom, or from Vivian at the Hampden town office. The kayak will be displayed and tickets will be available at Maine Savings during April.

The committee is looking for volunteers interested in organizing a golf tournament to raise funds for Children’s Day. Groups and individuals also are needed on Children’s Day to help run various events. Call Amy Lorenzo at 862-5522 or Don Darling at 947-2866 to volunteer.

The Children’s Day committee meets at 7 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month. The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at the Weatherbee School rather than the Hampden town office.
