Track and field at Brewer High School is a program with a rich tradition.
In the late 1970s, Glendon Rand, who now coaches Brewer’s distance runners, was a part of that tradition as one of the best distance runners not only of his era, but in Maine high school history.
Saturday, top Brewer athletes from the past such as Rand and present standouts, such as Brendon Carr will come together at Pendleton Street Field for the Brewer Track Alumni Meet.
Field events start at 11 a.m. and running events at 11:15.
All three Brewer coaches – head coach Jamie Crowley, Rand and Matt Collins (throws) – are Brewer alums and those three, along with Dave Jeffrey, who coached indoor track at Brewer from 1979-2003, came up with the idea for the meet.
“We used to have alumni meets in indoor all the time, [so] I was thinking, let’s have an alumni meet,” Crowley said. “I went to Buck [Rand], went to Matt, went to Dave Jeffrey, and they said it was a great idea.”
Crowley said this is the first time the outdoor squad will host such a meet, adding that the “last one he remembers was in indoor in 1993.”
Rand’s computer has been piling up with e-mails the past week or so from alumni who have wanted to participate.
“I’m surprised by [the] response by alumni who want to come do it,” he said. “I think it will be kinda cool.”
The meet will bring together athletes on the same track who have competed in the program over the last four decades.
“The big thing that this does, it shows people that are here how important this program is to so many people and so many age groups,” Crowley said. “That’s why we wanted to do it.”
Collins was a part of the last Brewer boys team, indoor or outdoor, to win a state championship (1996, indoors).

Beach to Beacon filling up
As usual, the Beach to Beacon 10K, arguably Maine’s most popular road racing event, is filling up quickly.
As of Monday – less than four weeks into registration – approximately 4,144 runners have registered for the Aug. 5 race in Cape Elizabeth.
Race organizers expanded the field from 5,000 to 5,500 runners this year. Registration is expected to close before the end of April.
Runners can register by logging onto www.beach2beacon.org or heading to their local TD Banknorth branch for a printed registration form.
Boston Marathon TV
If you’re looking to tune in to Monday’s Boston Marathon, the race will be televised on the Outdoor Life Network once again this year.
Coverage starts at 11:30 a.m., approximately one minute before the elite female runners start the 26.2-mile journey from Hopkinton to Boston.
