Barry Watson has suffered enough.
First he played eldest brother Matt Camden on “7th Heaven.” Next came a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. Then he starred in the cross-dressing film “comedy” “Sorority Boys.”
Now, for better or worse, he’s in “What About Brian,” which premieres Sunday before moving to its regular 10 p.m. Monday slot.
Well, what about “What About Brian”?
In this lightweight drama, which has been pushed further and further back on the ABC schedule (never a good sign), Watson plays Brian, the single guy whose circle of friends have all been paired off.
Brian isn’t a commitment-phobe, but rather a romantic who’s looking for Miss Right. He thinks he has found her in Marjorie (played by Sarah Lancaster), who unfortunately just got engaged to his longtime best friend, Adam (Matthew Davis). And so he pines away for her.
Rounding out the ensemble are Brian’s older sister, Nic (Rosanna Arquette), and her husband Angelo (Raoul Bova), who are trying to start a family, and young parents Dave (Rick Gomez) and Denna (Amanda Detmer), whose spark has died after having children.
“What About Brian” is from the soulful-stolen-glances school of drama, with little emotional or literal fireworks and an angst-ridden soundtrack. This will be a tough sell up against the gory (“CSI: Miami”) and the eerie (“Medium”).
