Four-run eighth powers Husson Gray, Spencer lift Eagles past Colby

BANGOR – James Gray allowed just one run on four hits with four strikeouts over eight innings and Justin Spencer laced a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to lead the Husson College baseball team to a 5-4 victory over Colby College of Waterville on Tuesday.

Sean Brawn added two singles and an RBI for the Eagles.

Andy Carr and Tyler Hales each had two hits, including a triple, with one RBI to lead the White Mules.

Softball

Bates sweeps Thomas

At Lewiston, Sacia Saniuk broke a scoreless tie with a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift Bates College past Thomas College 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Bobcats captured the nightcap 4-1.

In the first game, Kristin Masino fired a complete-game two-hit shutout for Bates, walking one and striking out six.

Joy Ireland took the loss for Thomas, striking out nine and walking none in six-plus innings.

In the second game, Massino produced an RBI single to cap a three-run sixth inning for Bates.

Katie Franklin scored on a fielder’s choice and Carola Cassaro scored on a throwing error. Saniuk added an RBI single.

Six different hitters had a single apiece for the Terriers.

Saint Joseph’s sweeps UMF

At Standish, Colby McKenney had two hits, including a double, with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead Saint Joseph’s past the University of Maine at Farmington 6-5 in the first game of a doubleheader.

St. Joseph’s beat UMF 7-5 in the second game.

In the first game, Leanne Morton had a double and three RBIs while Jamie Morrison had two hits with an RBI.

Megan Goodrow led the Beavers with three hits and an RBI.

In the second game, Gabrielle Burrola hit a double and had four RBIs for St. Joe’s.

McKenney added a double and an RBI for the Beavers.

Husson sweeps Maine Maritime

At Castine, Carolyn McAvoy and Shawna Bell each hit two home runs as Husson swept Maine Maritime Academy 23-4 and 14-3 in a doubleheader.

In the first game, McAvoy and Bell each had three hits. Erika Veinote pitched the win for Husson.

Darcy Herrick had two doubles to lead Maine Maritime.

In the second game, McAvoy hit a solo home run and scored three runs for the Eagles.

USM wins a pair

At Gorham, Katie Mainville singled twice and doubled to knock in three runs and pitched a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as the Huskies rolled past UMass Boston 8-0 en route to a doubleheader sweep. USM won the nightcap 11-3.

In the first game, Katie Martell notched two singles and plated three runs while Evon Hudspeth tacked on an RBI double for Southern Maine.

In the second game, Danica Martin laced a two-run homer to start a five-run second inning as Southern Maine earned the sweep.

Megan Stanley added a two-run double and Meghan Ford an RBI single.

Jen Widener hit an RBI double and Andrea Ciarletta an RBI single for UMass Boston.
