MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK – An American man who drove drunk down the wrong side of the Trans-Canada Highway for 12 kilometers is a lot lighter in the wallet today.

Darrell Glen MacDougall, 42, of Bangor, Maine, was fined $2,300 Tuesday for failing the breathalyzer test on Monday.

Crown prosecutor Nicole Angers told the court that MacDougall blew a .340 blood-alcohol reading – more than four times the legal limit.

“I’ve never, in five years on the bench, seen a reading of .340,” said Judge Anne Dugas-Horsman. “It’s a wonder you’re here, alive and well and that there are no victims.”

Police were called at noon Monday after a customer at a coffee shop in Salisbury, New Brunswick, noticed a car driving on the wrong side of the four-lane highway.

His car was later clocked at a speed of 120 km/h or about 75 mph.

MacDougall was picked up and charged with failing the breathalyzer, impaired driving, and for having a radar detector in his car.

He was fined another $288 for having the detector, which is illegal in New Brunswick. He is also banned from driving in Canada for 18 months.

MacDougall had been returning to Maine after visiting family over the Easter weekend.
