BREWER – Known for his exciting live shows, singer-songwriter Jonathan Edwards will wrap up the Brewer Theatre Concert Series with a performance at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Brewer Middle School, 5 Somerset St.
Born in Minnesota, Edwards formed his first band in high school and began writing songs. Before long, he gained a following and was opening for artists such as B.B. King and the Allman Brothers.
In 1970, he went into the studio to record his first solo album. At the end of the session, he hurriedly recorded a tune called “Sunshine (Go Away Today),” doing all the harmonies and most of the instrumental work himself.
The song became a million-selling hit, and instant fame for Edwards was the result. To this day, the song is a staple of classic rock and oldies stations, and a new generation of fans cropped up when the song was featured in the soundtrack of the movie “Anchorman.”
Edwards has recorded 13 solo albums and collaborated with Emmylou Harris, Jimmy Buffett, Maura O’Connell and Christine Lavin. He also has produced and co-written songs by Maine’s Cheryl Wheeler.
His children’s album, “Little Hands,” was selected by the National Library Association as a Notable Children’s Recording, and his varied career also has included touring in a production of the musical “Pump Boys and Dinettes” and scoring several feature films.
Recent projects include narrating and performing in the series “Cruising America’s Waterways,” which has been aired on PBS stations nationwide. The series also spawned a CD, which features new performances of some of his most famous songs, both live and in the studio.
Edwards continues to draw positive reviews for his recordings and live performances. Billboard Magazine calls him “a strong, warm performer who writes soothing and often moving tunes,” and a Washington Post review said, “Edwards’ voice is so naturally malleable that all he really needs is a song with a strong melodic hook and he’s home free.”
Tickets for the Jonathan Edwards concert are $20, available at the Grasshopper Shop in Bangor, Brewer Middle School and online at www.brewertheatre.com. For information, call 989-8640.
