BREWER – A group of volunteers and OHI employees will gather 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 6, to do landscaping at Chalila House, 130 North Main St.

Volunteers are needed to help plant flowers and shrubs. Those who have perennials that can be divided for transplanting are asked to drop by and donate them. Also, bring garden tools for your own use or to share.

OHI has the following items on its wish list: bags of mulch, bags of soil, gardening tools and gloves, shrubs, plants and flowers, gift certificates to garden stores, and someone to help tend the plants and shrubs once they’re in the ground.

The Chalila House will provide eight one-bedroom apartments for people who struggle with mental illness and homelessness and who might become homeless again without the program.

Named in memory of MaryAnne Chalila, former director of the Bangor Department of Health and Welfare and a tireless advocate for people who are disenfranchised, Chalila House will provide what she envisioned – safe, affordable housing for people making the transition from homelessness, institutionalization or supported living to independence.
