OLD TOWN – The River Coalition, in collaboration with the Old Town school department, will hold a free workshop designed to assist parents in guiding their child through the potentially rough terrain of adolescence.

Guiding Good Choices is an interactive, multimedia program aimed at increasing effective communication, managing family conflict, promoting family bonding and equipping everyone to remain substance free.

Nationally recognized as an effective prevention program, Guiding Good Choices has been shown to reduce alcohol and marijuana use among young people by 40 percent, reduce the progression to more serious substance use by 54 percent and increase the likelihood that nonusers will stay drug-free by 26 percent.

Each of the four sessions lasts an hour and a half and is geared toward parents of third- to eighth-graders. Child care is available upon request. Snacks and refreshments are provided and participants receive a monetary incentive to help promote family fun upon completion of the workshop.

The workshops take place 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27; Tuesday, May 2; Thursday, May 4; and Wednesday, May 10, at the Old Town Public Library. Call the River Coalition at 827-8744 to register for the workshop.
