Coach Winkin

BANGOR – The Bangor City Council issued a proclamation April 10 to recognize Coach John Winkin on the occasion of his 1,000th coaching victory on March 12, when he led the Husson College Eagles to a 6-3 win over Drew University.

Winkin’s life experiences, the proclamation said, range from serving as a Navy lieutenant commander in World War II to his current position as baseball coach at Husson College. He also was head coach at Colby College from 1954 to 1974 and head coach at the University of Maine from 1975 to 1996.

Winkin was named National Coach of the Year in 1965 and was coach of the 1983 U.S. National Team that included Mark McGwire.

Mother’s Day race

The 16th annual Mother’s Day 5K Road Race, sponsored by Penquis Community Action Program, will challenge local runners on Sunday, May 14, in Rockland.

Racers will be a mixture of die-hard runners and casual strollers. The race places emphasis on mothers running or walking with their children. Participants may run, jog or walk the 3.1-mile course around Rockland. Registration is 7-8:15 a.m. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. Refreshments, fruit and restrooms will be provided. Each application will receive one free race logo T-shirt. Prizes in a variety of categories will be awarded.

Advance registration is $15 for a single entrant, or $20 for a family. An additional $2 will be charged the day of the race. Registration forms are available at Penquis CAP, 170 Pleasant St., Rockland, or at www.penquiscap.org. Call 596-0361, or (800) 585-1605 to obtain information.
