BANGOR – Youth Adelantando, a local youth activist group, will hold a community night 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, May 5, at the Lunchbox Cafe.

The evening’s theme is “Contemporary Conflict: Finding Color in a Black and White World” and will involve a silent auction of local artwork, live music and readings of poetry and prose.

Youth Adelantando, which means “youth going forward,” is an autonomous group of local high school students from Greater Bangor.

Members are committed to working on sweatshop-free purchasing, providing alternatives to military recruitment, promoting fair trade and facilitating discussion on economic and social justice in their schools and in the broader community.

The group is seeking submissions from local community members of art, poetry and short prose on the theme. Deadline for submission is Saturday, April 22.

Art may be dropped off at Hampden Academy or Bangor High School art classrooms, at the Lunchbox Cafe or Justice Clothing in downtown Bangor, or at the PICA/Peace and Justice Center offices, 170 Park St. in Bangor, or at the Youth Adelantando table at the HOPE Festival 10 a.m.-4p.m. Saturday, April 22, in the University of Maine gym.

There will be a silent auction at which artists may sell their work. Artwork should have a matte, if possible. Submission forms must accompany each piece, and the forms may be found at each drop box. Poetry and prose may be submitted by e-mail to youthadelantando@pica.ws.

Those who would like to read prose or poetry, or play music should e-mail youthadelantando@pica.ws.
