Twirl away at World Dance Day events in Brewer

Saturday, April 29, is World Dance Day, and you have the opportunity to dance the day away, first by learning new dances and then by trying them out.

From Abbie McMillen and Linda Miller comes word that the Mainiac Swing Dance Society – a statewide, nonprofit organization – will host a series of afternoon partner-dance workshops beginning at 2 p.m. that day at Well Forms, 797 Wilson St. in Brewer.

Everyone with an interest in swing dancing and swing music is welcome and, while partner dances will be taught, it is not necessary to bring a partner.

Individual classes are $5 for MSDS members and $6 for non-members, or $15 and $20, respectively, for all classes. Membership in MSDS is open to everyone.

Balboa Basics will be taught at 2 p.m., Charleston Variations at 3 p.m., intermediate West Coast Swing at 4 p.m., and the Lindy Hop for East Coast and West Coast swing dancers at 5 p.m.

The workshops will be followed by a beginner West Coast Swing Class at 7:30 p.m., and a dance at 8:30 p.m. featuring disc jockey music suitable for all forms of swing dancing.

The cost for the lesson and dance is $10, or $8 for just the dance.

Maine Attorney General Steven Rowe, nationally-known educator Dr. David Craig and Hancock County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Jason Lepper are the featured speakers for the Hancock County Summit on Underage Drinking from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at Ellsworth High School.

Presentations will also be made by students from EHS and Sumner High School in East Sullivan, and there will be an opportunity for the audience to participate in the discussion.

Mary Anne Eason of the Orono Bicentennial Committee reports that the Orono Quilters and Bangor Bear Paw Quilters are hosting a Quilt Show 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, April 28, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Church of Universal Fellowship, 82 Main St. in Orono.

The requested donation is $3.

Also on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is Orono Creates, an arts and crafts show featuring past and present Orono resident artisans, in Asa Adams Elementary School gymnasium in Orono.

Admission is free for this event that features everything from basketry to jewelry, music and paintings.

The Joshua MacKay Family Team and the Witch’s Brew Team of Brewer High School are hosting a Bake Sale beginning at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Marden’s in Brewer.

Proceeds benefit the March of Dimes to help prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

You are invited to attend A Sacred Concert celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart at 7 p.m. Friday, April 28, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York St. in Bangor.

The concert is free, but donations will be accepted.

St. John’s Director of Music Kevin Birch conducts the concert featuring the choirs of St. John’s Church and soprano Karen Pendleton, offering some of Mozart’s major choral and instrumental works.

The Hampden Fire Department Yard Sale to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association begins at 8 a.m. Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April 29, at the Hampden Municipal Building, 106 Western Ave.

To donate goods, call the HFD at 862-4586 or bring them to the Municipal Building.

All proceeds benefit programs and services of the Maine Chapter of the MDA.

The Keepers of the Brooksville Baptist Church are hosting a Yard Sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 29, at the Club House in Brooksville Corner.

Proceeds benefit the Brooksville Baptist Church Preservation.

The 4th annual John Bapst Auction, with Paul Dupuis of Cumulus Media as guest auctioneer, is 6-9:30 p.m. Saturday April 29, in the John Bapst Memorial High School Auditorium, 100 Broadway in Bangor.

With hors d’oeuvres by alum Paul Noonan of the New Moon Cafe, a cash bar and door prizes, the auction offers a variety of items to appeal to all bidders.
