JIM NICKNAIR
Nicknair, a junior on the Brewer High baseball team, pitched a five-inning perfect game Tuesday as the Witches defeated Nokomis of Newport 8-0 in a rain-shortened game at Heddericg Field in Brewer. Nicknair struck out eight batters and walked no one while leading the Witches to their first win of the season.
Small School (Classes C-D)
NICK EMERY
Emery, a junior on the Penquis Valley of Milo baseball team, has used both his bat and arm to help the Patriots get out to a 2-0 start this spring. Emery doubled, singled and had two RBIs in a season-opening 16-5 win at Schenck of East Millinocket, then pitched a six-hitter as the Patriots edged Piscataquis of Guilford on Tuesday.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
TERREN HALL
Hall, a junior pitcher for the Bucksport softball team, picked up a 5-1 win in the Golden Bucks’ season opener Tuesday against Hermon. Hall took a perfect game into the seventh inning, when she gave up two hits. She finished with 13 strikeouts and no walks, helping herself with a two-run homer, a double and a single.
Small School (Classes C-D)
HANNAH BRETON
The Greenville junior won two events in an outdoor track and field meet to pace the four-member Lakers girls team to a third-place finish in a nine-team meet on April 20. Breton won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 50.07 seconds and took the long jump with a best distance of 15 feet, 71/2 inches. She was also second in the 100 hurdles and third in the pole vault.
