Great Britain theme for spring concert

BANGOR – The New Renaissance Singers will present its spring concert, “Spring in the Isles,” at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at the Brick Church, Union Street, Bangor. The concert is free, but donations are always welcome. A basket for a raffle filled with items representative of Great Britain, the concert theme, will be raffled.

The first half of the concert will include English madrigals and other renaissance music. Titles include “Now Is the Month of Maying,” “Pastime with Good Company,” “The Silver Swan,” “Fair Phyllis I Saw,” “April Is in My Mistress’ Face” and “Sing We and Chant It.”

The music in the second half of the concert program will comprise romantic songs from Ireland, Scotland and Britain, and traditional folk songs. Titles include “The Gypsy Rover,” “Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal,” “The Banks O’ Doon,” “Highland Mary,” “The Ash Grove,” and “Sundown.” “The Ash Grove” will feature solos from Melva Kent and Mike Strang.

Other solos will include “Eileen Aroon” by Bill Shook, “Silkie” by Nancy Averill, “May It Be” by Marie Harrington, “A Heart That’s Free” by Molly Stevens, and “Scarborough Fair” by Pat Moulton.

The group sings under the direction of Laura Estey and is accompanied by Yvonne Drake. The New Renaissance Singers are a community choral group formed in 1991. It is composed of a small group of musicians from the Bangor area whose mission is to join together in harmony to enhance the enjoyment of music in Greater Bangor.
