LEVANT – Town officials scrapped plans Wednesday to make major changes to the area where the Pine Tree, South Levant and Griffin roads meet.

The town had planned to straighten out some of the curves on Griffin Road and raise sections to improve visibility on the road. Town Manager Scott Pullen said that because of the curves and knolls, motorists on Pine Tree Road have a difficult time seeing traffic coming from the other two roads that meet at the Pine Tree Road.

But last year, estimates for repairs came in about twice as much as the $180,000 that town residents approved to be bonded for the repairs in 2004.

Pullen said an alternative was to remove some of the knolls, but test borings done recently indicated that there is extensive ledge in the area, some of it less than 2 feet below the surface, that would have to be blasted and removed.

The town manager said the blasting would be expensive and potentially could cause problems and disruptions in the area.

“It’s just too costly to do something [extensive],” Pullen said.

The town could consider reclaiming and repaving some of the road as a less costly alternative, the town manager said.

In other action, selectmen gave the go-ahead for the town to give notice and if necessary take legal action against several residents who are in violation of the town’s junkyard ordinance.

Letters went out last summer to 23 residents identified as being in violation and a second certified letter went out toward the end of the year. Pullen said that most of those residents are now in compliance or working toward it, but that two or three remain in violation. A third letter, this one from the town’s attorney, spells out a time frame to come into compliance and indicates that the town will take legal action against continued violators.

Also on Wednesday, selectmen approved expanding the town’s spring cleanup day, scheduled for May 20, to include televisions, computer monitors and laptops, items usually reserved for a regional cleanup day in the fall.
