Hampden boys, girls sweep meet

BREWER – In the early portion of a track season, coaches are usually happy when their athletes solidify themselves for championship meets with solid times and distances.

First-year Hampden Academy coach Ben Schall was impressed with the way his Broncos did just that at a multi-team meet Friday afternoon at Pendleton Street Track.

Hampden swept the team titles, with the girls rolling past the host Witches 184 to 109. Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln was third in the four-team field with 89 points and Calvary Chapel of Orrington scored four.

The HA boys staved off a late challenge from Brewer, pulling away in the final two events, the discus and javelin, for a 163-131 victory. Lee Academy was third of five teams with 32, followed by Mattanawcook (26) and Calvary Chapel (13).

In the girls meet, Nori Francis-Mezger and Lauren Maltz combined for 56 points, with Maltz winning the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes and Francis-Mezger taking all three throwing events plus the pole vault.

In the long run, Hampden will rely on those two for quality points.

“Our team counts on performers like that and they did great today,” said Schall, a Connecticut native who ran track and field at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain.

The track at Brewer, which is in a wide-open field, wasn’t as windy Friday as it normally is, and some fast times were put up.

Maltz’s times were 13.15 seconds in the 100, 28.12 in the 200 and 62.09 in the 400.

However, Schall’s focal point for the time being is getting some of the younger kids experience and the veterans good marks.

“Getting kids involved in quite a few events, getting a broad base of experience, getting some good marks and a good starting point is what we’re working on right now,” he explained. “Everybody’s either performing to their potential [or] there were a lot of personal bests set today. I’m impressed.”

Francis-Mezger cleared eight feet in the pole vault and had throws of 90 feet, 11 inches in the discus, 32-101/2 in the shot put and 109-7 in the javelin.

Renee LaFlamme of Mattanawcook took two individual events and anchored the Lynx’ winning 4×800 team. She won the 1600 in 5:47.24 and 800 in 2:40.24, outkicking Brewer freshman Katie Snow, who finished second, in the final yards.

LaFlamme was joined by Quinci Sanderson, Devan Knott and Jana Larlee on the 4×800.

In the boys meet, the Broncos’ depth in the throws enabled them to halt a late Brewer charge.

Jared Cousens and Sam Michaud went 1-2 in discus and Andrew Parsons and John Lenz 1-2 in the javelin, good for a combined 32 points.

Hampden doesn’t really have “any superstars,” Schall said, but they have the depth to nickle-and-dime opponents on any given day.

“We spread across the events very well so I guess that’s our strength,” he said.

Lenz, who started jumping this past winter, could be one of the state’s best jumpers.

“He’s made great progress, and we really look forward to what he can do toward the end of the season,” Schall said.

Lenz’s winning distance in triple jump was 40-4 and he also won the long jump in 19-8.

Hampden took two out of the three relay events, winning the 4×800 and taking the 4×100 after Brewer was disqualified for a baton drop in the second handoff zone.

Witches’ distance ace Brendan Carr singled in the 800, cruising to the win in that race in 2:03. He also anchored Brewer’s winning 4×400 team, which included Kyle Allcroft, Bobby Coombs and Dan Juilli.

Coombs, a junior, also ran to a win in the 300-meter hurdles in 46.76 seconds while Juilli took second (48.29).
