Robinson leads Maine to win

VESTAL, N.Y. – Scott Robinson continues to set the tone this season for the University of Maine pitching staff.

The senior righthander pitched a four-hit shutout Friday as the Black Bears opened their America East series against Binghamton with a 4-0 victory at Varsity Field.

UMaine takes a 25-11-1 record (7-2 AE) into today’s noon doubleheader.

Robinson, who on Wednesday set UMaine’s career appearances record and tied the mark for career saves, achieved two personal milestones Friday. He pitched his first collegiate shutout while also recording his first complete game as a Black Bear.

Robinson (7-2) struck out one and did not walk a batter, retiring the last 18 batters he faced after Davis’ leadoff single in the fourth inning.

His teammates helped atone for two errors by turning double plays.

Ryan Quintal led the Bears with a double, a single and two RBIs while Brewer’s Joel Barrett stroked two singles.

Aaron Davis singled twice for Binghamton (19-15-1, 6-3 AE).

UMaine scored the only run it would need in the first inning off loser Scott Diamond (4-5). Barrett ignited the rally with a two-out single and took second on an error. Quintal followed with a run-scoring single to center field.

Tufts 10, Colby 5

At Medford, Mass., Nick Curato, Greg Chertok and Jim O’Leary each hit an RBI single in the third inning to lead Tufts University past Colby College of Waterville.
