GORHAM – Chris McInnis drove in two runs to help Husson College beat the University of Southern Maine 3-2, but the Huskies came back to take the second game of Sunday’s baseball doubleheader 6-2.
Despite the loss, Husson clinched the second seed in the North Atlantic Conference tournament and will play the winner of the Thomas College/Castleton State game being played on Monday.
In the first game, Sean Brawn doubled and singled for the Eagles and Adam Sheehan hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to break the 1-1 tie.
Max Arsenault doubled and singled and knocked in a run for the Huskies.
In the second game, Eddie Skeffington hit a home run and drove in two runs for the Huskies. Jordan Yanni had two singles and two RBIs and Ryan Bourque singled twice with an RBI.
Sheehan and Justin Spencer each had an RBI for the Eagles.

Husson sweeps UM-Farmington
At Bangor, Bucksport native Jason Harvey hit a home run, a triple, and three singles to drive in four runs and score four times to help lead Husson College to the 14-3 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in the opening game. Husson also won the second game 6-4.
In the first game, Justin Spencer of Brewer doubled and singled and scored three runs for the Eagles and Chris McInnis hit a single and a double to knock in two runs.
Ryan DiPompo had two singles and two runs scored for UM-Farmington and Greg Melanson singled with two RBIs.
In the second game, Brian McGinley tripled, doubled, and singled with three RBIs for Husson and McInnis had two singles and two runs scored. Harvey had a double and an RBI.
Chip Burnham doubled and singled with an RBI for UM-Farmington and Cody Stackpole had two singles and a run scored.

Tufts sweeps Colby
At Medford, Mass., Saturday, Tufts completed East division conference play with 12-4 and 15-3 wins over Colby.
Brian Casey, Brian McDavitt and Jim O’Leary each had five hits in two games for the Jumbos. McDavitt had a home run in both games and finished with eight RBIs. Caset added five RBIs and had three stolen bases for the winners.
Tom Salemy hit a home run in each game for Colby and notched three RBIs. Nick Spillano had three hits for the Mules.

USM sweeps Plymouth State
At Plymouth, N.H., Ryan Bourque hit two doubles and single to drive in a run and help the University of Southern Maine past Plymouth State University in the first game on Saturday. The Huskies also won the second game 8-3.
In the first game, Max Aresnault had two doubles and a single for the Huskies and Eddie Skeffington hit three singles and drove in two runs. Ryan Pike hit a triple and two singles.
Josh Labossiere singled twice for Plymouth State.
In the second game, Nick Vardaro had a double and two singles with an RBI for Southern Maine. Stefan Black had a double and two RBIs and Bourque added two RBIs.
C.J. Rousseau and Labossiere both drove in a run for Plymouth State.

Softball
Southern Maine sweeps Keene St.
At Keene, N.H. Saturday, Southern Maine won both games in the seventh inning, edging Keene State 4-3 and 4-2.
In the first game, senior Katie Mainvill won her eighth game of the season scattering seven hits and striking out eight.
With the game tied 3-3, Christen Lachapelle slapped an RBI single to score Sabrina Mills. Lachapelle also hit a double and drove in two runs. Mills finished with two singles.
Owl’s pitcher Ashlee Nicholson hit two singles and Jessica Starkey added a two-run double.
In the second game, Southern Maine scored two runs in the top of the seventh on a Mills RBI sacrifice fly and an RBI squeeze play from Dawn Ross to score Danica Martin and seal the win.
Freshman pitched Bree Loon earned her 10th win of the season, striking out nine. Caterina Riitano added a single, double and an RBI for the Huskies.
Sarah Campbell hit two singles and drove in a run for the Owls.

Colby, Tufts split
At Waterville, Colby senior Lauren Olmsted pitched all nine innings as the Mules picked up the 3-2 win, but Tufts bounced back in the second game, 13-5.
In the first game, Olmsted, who leads the NESCAC in earned run average at 1.13, allowed no earned runs and struck out two.
Olmsted and Essie Widlanski each got RBI singles in the top of the ninth to pull out the victory.
Erica Bailey hit a double and two singles for Tufts.
In the second game, the Jumbos put the game away in the top of the sixth, scoring nine runs. Maya Ripecky had a double and two singles with three RBIs, and Heather Kleinberger had a home run and a single scoring three runs for the winners.
Carlie Minichino had a double and a single, and Tory Starr had two singles for the Mules.

Thomas, UMF in postseason
The Thomas College and the University of Maine-Farmington softball teams have advanced to the first round of the North Atlantic Conference’s East division tournament, which starts Tuesday.
The No. 3 Terriers of Waterville (18-19, 6-4) will face the No. 2 Beavers (21-10, 7-3) at 4 p.m. in Farmington. UMF is the defending NAC champion.
Lasell College (22-14, 7-3) earned the No. 1 seed in the East, while Lesley (15-15, 5-5) is the fourth seed. Those two teams will also play Tuesday.
In the West division, Elms earned the top seed and will host No. 4 Becker, while No. 3 Mount Ida will face No. 2 Castleton State.
The winners advance to the conference semifinals Friday, which will be hosted by the top remaining seed. The teams will be re-seeded for a double-elimination format. The championship game will be held Saturday with an if-necessary game Sunday.
Saint Joseph’s wins title
At Standish, Saint Joseph’s College cruised by the Mitchell Pequots 11-1 to win the Division III Independents Northeast Championship on Sunday.
Mitchell advanced to the championship game earlier Sunday with a 14-3 win over Green Mountain.
In the championship game, the Monks used a nine-run first inning, led by Gabrielle Burrola’s two doubles and four RBIs, and ran away with the title.
The Monks added a run in the first and a final run in the fourth as Audra Cushman singled and went on to score.
Tournament MVP Colleen Delahanty improved to 13-7 and struck out two in the win. Delahanty was joined by Burrola and Kristi Albert on the All-Tournament team.
Mitchell scored their lone run in the third on an RBI single by Jennifer Cassara.
In the first game Saturday, Delahanty struck out four and allowed one hit as Saint Joe’s blanked UMaine-Presque Isle.
Samantha Grier had the lone hit, a double, for the Owls.
In the third game, Mitchell College eliminated UMPI in game three, 11-5.
Erin Pelletier had two singles and drove in two runs, and Anna Lenentine hit a triple and a single for UMPI. Grier added three singles.
Grier and Lenentine were named to the All-Tournament team.
In the fourth game, Burrola struck out seven and tossed a one-hitter as Saint Joe’s blanked Green Mountain.
Erin Ackley and Cushman added a double and single, respectively.

Western Conn. sweeps USM
At Danbury Conn., on Sunday, Meg Cirigliano pounded eight hits over two games and knocked in the game-wining run in the ninth inning of the first game to lead Western Connecticut to a pair of wins over the University of Southern Maine 2-1 and 3-2.
In the first game, Cirigliano went 5-for-5 with five singles and Shelby Slie struck out 12 Huskies.
Sabrina Mills and Danica Martin each hit doubles for USM.
In the second game, Stacy DiMaggio hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Colonials.
Katie Martell hit an RBI single, and Caterina Riitano hit a double and a single for the Huskies.
