Concert, auction to benefit Emmaus shelter

Everyone associated with Emmaus Homeless Shelter in Ellsworth, and especially director Sister Lucille MacDonald and members of its fundraising committee, are understandably excited about the concert with Masanobu Ikemiya and Live and Silent Auction from 1:15 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at St. Joseph Hall in Ellsworth.

Tickets are $30 for singles or $45 for couples.

However, there are only about 50 tickets left, so you need to call 469-6771 or 664-0245 as soon as possible to ensure your spot.

“This is the first time we’ve done something of this magnitude,” Sister Lucille said of the event to which Ikemiya – who founded Arcady Music Festival and was its artistic director for 25 years – has so graciously offered to give his time and assistance.

“I am extremely grateful for his interest for taking care of social justice issues and mainly for homelessness,” Sister Lucille said of Ikemiya’s coming performance and his previous assistance as well.

“His willingness to be present for us and to put the word out and to actually take action” means a great deal, she said.

“Many people can see there is a need, but actually to take action” is what makes Ikemiya special to Emmaus.

“He is so unassuming and wonderful, and we are grateful for that,” Sister Lucille said.

Ikemiya’s concert will include a combination of classical music and his ragtime offerings for which he is so well known.

Proceeds from the event benefit the shelter that has, for 14 years, housed individuals and families from all of Hancock County as well as providing nonresidential services from food boxes to gas vouchers, furniture, kitchen ware and clothing.

Among the many items in the live auction are paintings, fuel oil, travel, lodging and a one-year family pass for the Downeast Family YMCA.
