McGlinn, ‘Cats edge Houlton

PRESQUE ISLE – Matt McGlinn slammed a three-run homer to spark a four-run outburst in the second inning and he tripled later on in the game to lead the Presque Isle baseball team to a 6-4 high school victory over Houlton on Wednesday.

Luke Ireland hit an RBI single while Derek Belanger and Bennett Cassidy added two singles apiece for Presque Isle.

Harry Austin paced Houlton with a pair of singles, a double and an RBI.

At Van Buren, Billy Scull’s two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning gave the Tigers some important breathing room after Tony Vaillancourt’s solo homer in the bottom of the fifth had cut the lead to 5-4.

Rob McNamee had a pair of singles for Fort Fairfield and Jake Kenneson had a run-scoring single.

Andrew Taylor had a double for Van Buren.

At Danforth, Ken Suitter’s run-scoring double and singles by Kaleb Dicker and Josh Barnes highlighted a five-run fifth inning rally that erased a 6-5 deficit.

There were also three walks and two hit batsmen in the inning.

Barnes had three singles and scored twice and Isaiah Gillis tripled and singled, scored three runs and drove in a run. Adam Boudine added a pair of singles and Eric Preston tossed a four-hitter.

Nolan Gagnon double and singled and scored twice for Washburn.

Katahdin 18, Hodgdon 2

At Stacyville, Andy Kaye had two doubles and two RBIs to help lead the Katahdin Cougars past the visiting Hawks.

Tom Anderson had an RBI double and Ethan Qualey added an RBI single for Katahdin.

Jamie Ryan hit a two-run single and Jordan Guy singled for the only other hit

At Woodland, Craig Moody scattered five hits and struck out seven to lead the Dragons to victory.

Ryaan Bosch rapped three singles with two RBIs for the winners, while Scott Boomer singled twice and Todd Townsend added a two-run single.

Jake Funari hit an RBI double for Machias.

Calais 11, Shead 1

At Calais, Keegan McCormick hit a grand slam to help lift Calais past Shead of Eastport.

Robbie Rogers hit two doubles including a three-run double that ended the game for Calais. Nick Harmon, Jamey Farley, and Jordan Leeman each hit an RBI single.

Aaron Sullivan hit an RBI single for Shead and Mike Cummings hit the other single.

At Stacyville, Kayla Stevens stroked a two-run single with two out in the seventh inning to lift the Cougars to victory.

Ronni Robinson reached on an error and Brooke Smallwood singled to spark the rally.

Lindsay Albert knocked in six runs with two doubles for Katahdin. Stevens added two more singles and Robinson singled twice.

Sara Brewer hit a two-run home run and a single to lead Hodgdon. Amanda Scott posted a double and two singles, while Jayme Bither singled twice.

At Dyer Brook, senior right-hander Chelsea Collier threw her fourth career no-hitter, striking out 11 and walking one, to lead Southern Aroostook past Central Aroostook of Mars Hill.

Raya King paced the attack as she drove in five runs with a pair of singles and Amanda Clark contributed two singles and two RBIs.

Sarah Brewer was Central Aroostook’s only baserunner as she drew a one-out walk.

At Danforth, Samantha Cochran had a double and two singles to help lead Washburn past host East Grand.

At Presque Isle, Angela Norsworthy pitched a one-hitter while notching six strikeouts and four walks in Presque Isle’s shutout of Houlton.

Katie Moody and Heather Richards each singled twice for the Wildcats.

Shay Prosser’s single to left to start the fifth spoiled Norsworthy’s no-hit bid.

At Van Buren, Kerri Cunningham doubled twice and drove in two runs to help lead Fort Fairfield to the win.

Maryl Harris had a double and two singles with an RBI for the Tigers and Lauren Beckwith singled twice.

Megan Lajoie hit a solo home run and three singles for Van Buren. Lindsay Lajoie had three singles and two RBIs. Krystal Deschaines had two singles and two RBIs and Kelsey Smith singles twice.

Ellsworth 2, Hermon 0

At Hermon, Sabrina Jellison singled and eventually scored on a passed ball to help the Eagles edge the Hawks in nine innings.

Catie Cravens fired a three-hit shutout, striking out 16 and walking one, to lead Ellsworth. Maggie Seavey provided a bunt single and Kayla Lane a single for the Eagles.

Ally Wharton tripled for Hermon behind loser Ashley Kelley, who scattered three hits while registering 15 strikeouts and three walks. Cassie White laid down a bunt single and Kelley added a single.
