Bangor uses depth for sweep Boys and girls teams roll by rival Witches

BANGOR – The Bangor High School boys track and field team received great contributions from standouts Casey Quaglia and Cam Cormier as well as solid efforts from Tyler Seekins, Riley Masters and Curtis Coleman en route to a 215-121 win over cross-river rival Brewer at Cameron Stadium Friday.

Calvary Chapel of Orrington was third in the five-team field with 27 points, while Piscataquis of Guilford scored 19 and Penquis of Milo 5.

The Bangor girls earned the sweep with 254 points. Brewer scored 81, followed by PCHS (28), Penquis (20) and Calvary Chapel (1).

In the boys meet, Bangor distance ace Quaglia, a junior, credited many of his teammates for stepping up.

“The team wouldn’t be the same without kids like Riley [Masters] and Curtis [Coleman] and Ben [Ludwig],” he said. “We can’t win without them. We owe them just as much credit as Cam [Cormier] and myself.”

Bangor coach Joe Quinn added that Masters, who finished third in the 1,600 and second in the 3,200, is benefiting from having Quaglia to practice against each day.

“Riley’s doing very well, he’s obviously got Casey to push him, and that actually makes a big difference to him,” he said. “He’s got someone to race with and practice with, and that’s really brought him along well.”

Quaglia won yet another battle with Brewer senior Brendan Carr in the 1,600, making a pass with 300 meters to go after Carr took charge on the third lap.

“On the third lap he took the lead, I tried to ride him and get a pass, but he kept sprinting up and I couldn’t pass him,” Quaglia said.

Quaglia’s winning time was 4 minutes, 33.02 seconds while Carr came in at 4:37.28, good for second.

Quaglia also took the 3,200 in 10:09.09, running a 5:03 second 1,600.

“I was questioning myself because me and my coach were going over the splits the past few days, and I was going for a 10:10,” Quaglia explained. “She [Bangor distance coach Jamie Cook] was right, we picked it up and ran really good negative splits.”

Cormier won both the 100 and 200 dashes in 11.59 and 23.17 seconds, respectively, while Coleman was second in the 100 (12.06) and third in the 200 (24.52). Seekins anchored Bangor’s winning 4×400 relay and won the 110 hurdles in 18.09.

Carr came back to win the 800 in 2:07.33.

In the girls meet, Bangor’s Jolene Belanger took three individual events while Allison Clukey and Jennie Lucy captured two apiece with the multi-talented Belanger running the 1,600 for the first time this spring.

“We’re not really sure what she’s gonna do at states,” Quinn said. “She can do everything. She’s good at the 300 hurdles, the [1,600] and the 800.”

Bangor’s best performance of the afternoon came in the 4×100 relay, where the team of Amanda McGinn, Kelly Krapf, Angela Reed and Clukey executed perfect handoffs and zoomed to a time of 52.19 seconds.

“They’re much faster then they were at the end of last year,” Quinn said. “That was a very good time, they all had great handoffs.”

In addition to the 1,600, Belanger won both the long and triple jumps. Clukey captured both the 100 and 200 dashes and earned a second in long jump.

Bangor won all but two events contested on the track. Caitlyn Wilson of Brewer won the 3,200 in 13:23.26 and Penquis’ Lyzie Cook took the race walk in 9:52.41.
