Jamestown anniversary events

Godspeed sail

May 22-July 30, 2006 – A new replica of one of the ships that brought the first colonists to Jamestown to set sail May 22 from Jamestown Settlement for a tour of six East Coast ports. The Godspeed will dock in Alexandria, Va., May 27-June 3; Baltimore, June 9-12; Philadelphia, June 16-19; New York City, June 27-July 6; Boston, July 14-19; and Newport, R.I., July 25-30.

Virginia Indian heritage Virginia Indian Symposium: 400 Years of Survival, Oct. 5-6, 2006, Williamsburg, Va. – Virginia’s Indian tribes will hold a symposium on topics including sovereignty, federal recognition, health care, repatriation and education.

American Indian Intertribal Cultural Festival, July 21-22, 2007, Hampton, Va. – Festival highlighting the contributions and cultures of Virginia Indians, with native foods, dances, traditional stories, arts and crafts, and music.

Victory at Yorktown

Oct. 19-22, 2006, Yorktown, Va. – Revolutionary-period re-enactors and active military units from around the world salute men and women in uniform to mark the 225th anniversary of the Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown.

Jamestown Live!

Nov. 9, 2006 – Interactive Web cast “teach-in” on the significance of Jamestown, live from Jamestown.

African-American Imprint

Preview Gala, Oct. 14, 2006 – The Virginia African-American Forum to hold preview gala at Jamestown Settlement Museum in Williamsburg, Va., including a tour of new facilities. Other activities planned for spring 2007 include a heritage lecture and tour of the newly expanded galleries.

State of the Black Union: African-American Imprint on America, Feb. 9-10, 2007 – Television and radio host Tavis Smiley brings his annual State of the Black Union symposium to Jamestown. Virginia’s five historically black colleges and universities also will each host related symposia at other times.

Cultural and Commerce Exposition, summer 2007 – The African-American Advisory Council plans a cultural and commerce exposition to showcase the significant contributions of blacks in every area of American society.

Journey up the James

April 26-Nov. 10, 2007 – The replica Godspeed sails from the Chesapeake Bay up the James River in Virginia, re-creating parts of the Jamestown settlers’ original route.

The ‘World of 1607′

Spring 2007-Winter 2008, Jamestown Settlement Museum, Williamsburg, Va. – An exhibition that places Jamestown in a global context and will feature artifacts from around the world including a 15th century copy of the Magna Carta and a 16th century African ivory carving.

America’s Anniversary

May 11-13, 2007, Historic Jamestowne, Jamestown Settlement and Anniversary Park, Va. – Cultural events, pageantry, musical performances, a children’s stage, celebrity appearances and more are being planned to mark the 400th anniversary of the settlers’ landing at Jamestown.

Smithsonian festival

End of June-July 8, 2007, National Mall, Washington, D.C. – The Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage will feature Virginia, England and parts of West Africa as part of its annual festival, highlighting the legacies of Jamestown.

Future of Democracy

September 16-19, 2007, Williamsburg, Va. – The federal Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission will bring together scholars and practitioners from around the world to discuss democracy. A series of earlier conferences at universities across Virginia will culminate with this conference in Williamsburg.
