Tenants Harbor man injured in crash

ROCKLAND – A Tenants Harbor motorcyclist was injured Friday in a late-afternoon collision with a car on Maverick Street.

At 3:55 p.m. in heavy traffic, Harold Rohn, 84, of Glen Cove pulled his 1997 Toyota sedan into the path of a motorcycle driven by Randy Hilt, 40, police Sgt. Daniel Brown said.

The motorcycle, a 1984 Honda, was traveling in the extreme right lane heading east just before the traffic light at the intersection of Route 1 near McDonald’s. The sedan was traveling west on Maverick Street and was making a left turn onto Brewster Street.

Because of a long line of traffic, neither driver saw the other, Brown said.

Hilt, who was not wearing a helmet, hit the right rear of the car and was thrown into its side.

Brown did not know the extent of Hilt’s injuries, but said he did suffer a head injury while Rohn was not injured. Both drivers were traveling alone.

Hilt initially was taken by ambulance to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport and later was flown by helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Brown said.

According to a nursing supervisor, Hilt was still being evaluated at 10:20 p.m.

The accident tangled traffic for about an hour.

The motorcycle was destroyed, and the car had about $2,000 in damage.

Officer James Jillson is still investigating the accident.
