It’s Ghandi-does-reality-TV when Rabbi Shmuley Boteach comes on board to help families work through their problems in TLC’s new “Shalom in the Home.”
Trust me, the show is just as cheesy as its name.
TLC is bringing Shmuley, an Oxford-trained theologian and philosopher, into the lives of people who are having difficulties with relationships, marriage and parenting.
Shmuley might have the official training to offer advice, but he needs a lesson or two in the entertainment business.
The rabbi has written a dozen-plus books on relationships and families and counseled thousands of people through difficulties with marriage, parenting, sex and self-worth, but he isn’t the most entertaining fellow in reality TV.
But while the show isn’t much to talk about, the Web site is kind of fun to roam around.
A lengthy list of Shmuley-isms is sure to have at least one lesson we all could use.
Take my personal favorite piece of Shmuley advice for example:
“Have you really been successful if the people who mean the most to you think the least of you?”
Think about it.
Shmuley also says that that some adults need to be better individuals, and that when children act up, parents should take a good look in the mirror.
I agree, but before I get a slew of e-mails telling me that parents aren’t to blame for all the wrongs of their children, I’ll explain upfront that’s not what I mean.
What I’m saying is that children often mimic the behavior of their role models. In many cases, that’s a parent or guardian.
Shmuley is full of advice, and although he sounds a bit like Dr. Phil at times, I’m sure he’s got at least one lesson we all could use.
So if you think it’s time to do a little reflecting on your own life, check it out at least once by tuning into TLC at 10 a.m. Monday.
In other exciting reality news, I called it. Chris Young is the new “Nashville Star.”
The competition was tough this time around, but even the Man on the Couch said “Wow, he’s good,” when Chris sang.
Man on the Couch was disappointed when his favorite, Matt Mason, was eliminated before the show’s finale. But Matt was gracious and took it in style, and we all know that at 20 years old, he’s surely got a booming career ahead of him.
Congratulations to Chris, and best of luck to all the talented artists that were part of this season’s hit show.
