PORTLAND – The Maine Tide, a 14-and-under boys basketball team based in Greater Bangor, placed second over the weekend in its division at the 2006 state AAU tournament.

The team, coached by Tom St. John and Chris Whitney, finished with a 4-1 record in the tournament and with its performance will advance to the New England AAU championships in Boston on Memorial Day weekend and the AAU national tournament in Orlando, Fla., Aug. 1-2.

The Maine Tide played two games Sunday, defeating the Central Maine Panthers from the Lewiston-Auburn-Augusta area 57-46 in the semifinals before falling to the Gym Ratz from Portland 55-49 in the championship game.

In the semifinals, Colton Gross of Hermon and Paul Verville each scored 13 points for the Tide, while Brad Dolan of Winterport scored 10 points and Jordan Taylor of Skowhegan grabbed 14 rebounds. In the championship game, Gross scored 15 points and Taylor added 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Other members of the Maine Tide roster are Brad Hersey of Winterport, Nate Carson of Orrington, Steve Hall of Carmel, Josh Coleman of Thorndike, Ryan Petros of Ellsworth, Zach Stevens of Oakland and Dylan Keller of Thorndike.
