WINTERPORT – For the first time, the Winterport Dragway will offer Teen Championship Racing along with its usual day of drag racing Sunday.

Track manager Rick Palmer said the teen races are open to unlicensed drivers from 13 to 17.

The teen racing program is governed by International Hot Rod Association rules, and both boys and girls are invited to race, Palmer said.

All teen drivers must be accompanied by a parent or adult during the race. Drivers must undergo a basic safety and vehicle orientation screening before being allowed behind the wheel. All racers must ware helmets and seat belts. Only cars that can travel the one-eighth mile long track in 10 seconds or slower will be allowed to race – “you’re basic mom and dad go-get-the-groceries car,” Palmer said.

The track gate opens at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, May 14. Time trials begin at 9 a.m. and elimination races start at 12:30 p.m.
