Fields Pond Audubon Center in Holden has some great activities planned to appeal to everyone who loves birds, reports Judy Markowsky.
Celebrate Migratory Bird Day is 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at the center when Bob and Sandi Duchesne help you find some of Maine’s most beautiful birds during this bird walk for all ages.
The Celebrate Migratory Bird Day Bird Festival, 9:30-11 a.m., will be led by children, parents and teachers of Stillwater Montessori School, and activities about birds for schoolchildren, home-schoolers, their families and Scout groups will include project demonstrations and learning how to identify birds, their songs and what they eat.
You can also visit the plant sale, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., featuring organic, native and medicinal plants from Sweet Pea Perennials in Clifton, presented by Peter and Julie Beckford, certified organic growers.
Markowsky wants you to know that while admission and advice at the plant sale are free, the plants are not, and that a share of the proceeds will benefit the center.
Then it’s Celebrate Migratory Bird Day with Birding by Ear for People who are Blind and Visually Impaired, and their helpers, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
The free walk will be led by Bangor school system teacher Steve Coleman, an expert birder who, although he is blind, has led bird walks for more than six years.
The final event is Learn Birds Non-Visually from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Don Tarbet will demonstrate some high-tech and low-tech ways to learn bird song and other nature sounds.
