FARMINGTON – Former Gov. Angus King will deliver the keynote address to graduates during the University of Maine at Farmington’s 153rd Commencement ceremony Saturday.

The ceremony for the graduating class of 461 students will begin at 10:30 a.m. and is set to be held outdoors behind the UMF Olsen Student Center.

Graduating senior Jeanine Alberto, a resident of Walpole, Mass., will give the student address, and UMF’s President Theodora J. Kalikow and Vice President for Academic Affairs Allen Berger will confer degrees. Delivering greetings from the University of Maine System will be James Mullen, system trustee.

Receiving an honorary degree of doctor of humane letters is UMF professor emeritus Dr. Peter C. Doran, an active humanitarian and valued ambassador for UMF. Doran began teaching at UMF in 1971 and within six years founded the university’s community health education program, the only one of its kind in Maine. He also led the way in helping other University of Maine System campuses establish health education courses and programs.

While the ceremony will be held outdoors, guests may watch live over closed-circuit television in Lincoln Auditorium, located in Roberts Learning Center, a building adjacent to the outdoor ceremony. After commencement, the university will honor the new graduates with a reception in South Dining Hall, located in Olsen Student Center.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held inside the university’s Health and Fitness Center. Weather inquiries should be directed on the morning of the ceremony to the university switchboard at 778-7000.
