Special Olympians receive spirit award

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Special Olympians from the Charlotte White Center have been awarded the prestigious Brian McGovern Award for team spirit.

This annual award is given to the team that demonstrates the highest principles of support, enthusiasm, admiration and team spirit at the Special Olympics Winter Games held Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at Sugarloaf/USA.

The CWC is a nonprofit agency devoted to helping handicapped adults and children.

Teams were judged on the cohesion of their group, the look of their uniforms, dedication to the games, but most of all for unstinting support, cheerleading, excitement and enthusiasm for other teams competing in the games.

The McGovern Award Trophy is named in honor of Brian McGovern, who coached Special Olympics and was devoted to making Special Olympics a key part of his work. When McGovern was killed in a motorcycle accident, his fellow workers and athletes formed the award in his honor.

The trophy is held by the winners for one year and is returned each year at the winter Olympics to be given out again.
