CASTINE – Teams from Marblehead, Mass., and Blue Hill were the big winners at the eighth annual Downeast Fleet Racing Championship in Smith Cove Saturday and Sunday.
The two-day event attracted 23 sailing teams and 130 high school-age sailors from five New England states (Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut).
Marblehead High School won the overall team title, but George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill finished first in the Maine State High School Sailing Championship ahead of runner-up Mount Desert Island.
John Bapst Memorial High School of Bangor, competing for the first time in the event, finished third in the Maine high school championship.
The Bay State swept the top three places overall as Hingham High School finished second and St. John’s Prep was third.
The races, run jointly by Maine Maritime Academy and George Stevens Academy, involved two-person “420” boats. Each school competed with four, two-person crews.
George Stevens Academy’s team members are: A, Danny Moran-Noah Milliken and Jake Markos-Arvid Brown, B, John Jagger-Alex Cromwell and Liz Moran-Stephen Ashcroft.
