News in Brief ABBOT: OSPREY OUTAGE

For the second time in four days, a pair of persistent ospreys left the Moosehead Lake region in the dark. The birds have been trying to nest on a transmission pole that feeds power to the Moosehead Lake region. Central Maine Power constructed a wire cage last year to discourage birds from nesting, said CMP’s Gail Rice. But the ospreys have been dropping sticks into it to build a nest. Those sticks disrupted power for 4,400 customers for about four hours Saturday and again Tuesday. Since ospreys are federally protected, Rice said, the birds cannot be removed or their nests disrupted. Instead, the company has installed a new pole nearby and will add a platform to it this week.
