BROOKLINE, Mass. – The University of Maine baseball team left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, and it ended up costing the Black Bears as they dropped a 3-2 decision to Northeastern University in a rain-shortened, non-conference affair at Friedman Diamond Tuesday.

The game was called in the top of the sixth after a 32-minute rain delay.

The Huskies struck first in the bottom of the first when Matt Morizio stroked a solo home run off Bears’ starter Mitchell Clegg.

Maine drew even in the top of the second as Bobby Brown slapped an RBI single that scored Joel Barrett.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Huskies took the lead for good. Dan Milano started the rally by drawing a walk and scored on Josh Porter’s double down the left-field line, which was mishandled by left fielder Kevin McAvoy, as the ball skipped by him. Arman Sidhu gave NU some insurance with an RBI single.

Trevor Smith, who got the win in relief for the Huskies, walked in a run but Curt Smith flied out with the bases loaded, ending the threat.

Clegg (1-1) yielded three runs on three hits in four innings, walking one and striking out one.

Maine (30-18-1) 010 01 – 2 3 2

Northeastern (24-21) 100 20 – 3 3 1

Clegg, Powers (5) and McGraw; Carrington, Smith (4) and Milano
