Governor honors teen for community service

BANGOR – Peter Christensen, the son of Tom and Deb Christensen, has been named Youth Volunteer of the Year and a recipient of one of the 2006 Governor’s Service Awards.

Christensen, who was presented the award by Gov. John Baldacci, was honored for:

. Volunteering with the Glenburn Fire Department.

. Volunteering with Dirigo Search and Rescue, an organization which helps the Maine Warden Service search for lost hunters or outdoor enthusiasts.

. Constructing handicapped-accessible picnic tables for My Friend’s Place, an adult day care service for those with Alzheimer’s.

Christensen, a junior, is an honor student at Bangor High School, member of National Honor Society and the school band. He has just been

chosen as part of the AYES, Automotive Youth Excellence, program at United Technologies Center, and as part of the program will be working at Downeast Toyota this

summer and after school as an automotive service technician.

Christensen has been an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Bangor,

president of the church youth group, and member of the chime choir and the Glory

and Praise high school choir.

He was a junior counselor for two years at Camp Mechuwana, a Methodist church camp in Winthrop.
