Army Col. Richard A. Smart has retired after 26 years of active duty military service with the U.S. Army.

Smart is serving at the Pentagon as a national security policy analyst, an international negotiator and special assistant to the assistant secretary of defense for international security policy. He is a 1976 graduate of Caribou High School.

He and his wife, Janet, plan to retire to Jacksonville, Ala., in June.
