Police probe fraudulent bank charges

Police in Bangor and Hampden are investigating separate incidents in which residents reported fraudulent bank charges from overseas on their accounts.

A Bangor woman contacted city police on Wednesday to say that her credit union called her to let her know that three withdrawals totaling $942 were made from a business in Naples, Italy, Bangor police Sgt. Jim Owens reported. The woman wasn’t familiar with the store.

One day earlier in Hampden, a resident was notified that a credit card issued in his name was used to purchase items in Spain. The man hadn’t applied for that credit card, Sgt. Scott Webber said Wednesday. The charges never went through and the man was told to have a fraud alert placed with credit reporting agencies on his Social Security number.

Webber said that he is still awaiting some information, including the address where the credit card was delivered, although he acknowledged tracking down the person responsible likely would be hard. “Chances are it will be difficult to determine who the suspect is, but we are still investigating it,” he said.

Bangor police found a Levant man slumped over inside an SUV that had driven onto a sidewalk and struck a signpost on Front Street late Tuesday night.

The driver, Michael W. Lane, 27, was taken into custody and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and violation of conditions of release.

Bangor police Officer Edward. A. Mercier reported that Lane initially appeared unconscious in the SUV, which was left running and in drive. When the officer rapped his flashlight on the window, Lane woke up and tried to put the vehicle in reverse, police said. While getting his license for the officer, Lane reportedly pulled out a small plastic bag containing marijuana, which led to a summons later for possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

Lane’s blood-alcohol content registered 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Bangor police arrested Raymond Rolls, 37, of Bangor late Tuesday night after it was reported that he assaulted his girlfriend, then threatened to trash the apartment and her if she left or called the police.

The woman told Bangor police Officer Al Woolley that Rolls became angry with her when she was listening to music and not paying attention to him. He allegedly poured coffee brandy and whiskey on her from bottles he had just brought home, spilling it on her head, shoulders and the floor.

He later uprooted two plants and spread potting soil on the table and floor, police said. The woman tried to leave but got as far as the apartment hallway before Rolls pulled her back inside. Rolls left the Pine Street apartment, but not before reiterating his threat to trash the apartment and her, according to the police report.

Authorities found Rolls a few streets over at a residence on Grove Street and arrested him.
