Van Buren District Secondary School
VAN BUREN – Karla C. Michaud, principal of Van Buren District Secondary School, has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2006.
Lance Smith, son of Michael and Donna Smith of Van Buren, has been named valedictorian. He will attend Husson College to study pre-med.
He is an active member of the Crusader Chapter of the National Honor Society. He has participated in varsity soccer all four years, junior varsity basketball for three years, varsity basketball for two years and varsity baseball all four years. He was captain of the soccer and baseball teams his senior year.
Smith has been a student senate member for the past three years and is currently the president of student senate. He has been active in the community, being a coach for the Van Buren Recreation Youth Program for youth soccer and basketball, Special Olympics and the church bazaar. He was the 2005 recipient of the Bausch & Lomb Science award and the 2006 recipient of the Maine Principals’ Association Award.
Andrea McLaughlin, daughter of Jarrett and Janet McLaughlin of Van Buren, has been named salutatorian. She will attend the University of Maine to study political science with hopes of becoming a lawyer.
She has been a member of the student senate for four years and is currently president of the Van Buren chapter of the National Honor Society, which she has been a member of for the past three years. She has been active with the varsity basketball team, where she lettered for three years and was co-captain her senior year. She was a member of the varsity tennis team, where she lettered for four years and served as co-captain her junior and senior years.
McLaughlin volunteers at the Special Olympics, the Acadian Village and as lector at St. Bruno/St. Remi Catholic Church. She is employed by Robin’s Restaurant.
Trevor Hews, son of Brian and Billie Hews of Van Buren, has been named senior honor essayist. He will attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle to study physical education.
He was a member of the Crusader Chapter of the National Honor Society for three years, a member of the student senate for two years, serving as vice president during his junior year.
He has been active in varsity soccer as captain, lettering in varsity basketball his senior year, and varsity baseball, receiving best offensive player and key player awards. He is also active in his church youth group.
