ORONO – The Bangor Symphony Orchestra will present its 110th season finale concert 3 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the Maine Center for the Arts.
Music director and conductor Xiao-Lu Li will lead the orchestra through Bedrich Smetana’s “The Bartered Bride” overture; Camille Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals,” with guest soloists Henry Kramer and Pallavi Mahidhara; and Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony no. 8.
Kramer, 18, began playing piano at the age of 11 and one year later began lessons with Elizabeth Manduca in Portland. He has won first place in several competitions including the Portland String Quartet Competition and the Bangor Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, 2005.
Kramer appeared twice as a soloist on Public Radio International’s “From the Top.” In 2005, he graduated from the pre-college program at the Juilliard School. He is an alumnus of Cape Elizabeth High School, and is enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City under the tutelage of Julian Martin.
Mahidhara, 18, is already a seasoned veteran of the concert stage and competition circuit. She has appeared in solo and orchestral concerts in the United States, Canada, Europe and India, including a solo concert tour in 2004 with performances in Delhi, Bombay, Poona and Bangalore.
In 2000, Mahidhara was featured on “Piano Grand,” a celebration of the piano’s 300th birthday, hosted by Billy Joel and produced by the Smithsonian Institution and Maryland Public Television.
