Vinalhaven voters pass school budget

VINALHAVEN – A $3.2 million school budget was easily passed by voters Tuesday night at the annual SAD 8 budget session.

District spokeswoman Kathy Warren said Wednesday that taxpayers will see no increase in the school assessment even though the budget will increase 2.91 percent. The reason is that revenues for next year are higher than in 2005-06.

The $3,265,913 means a jump of $92,403 from last year. Revenues from state and local sources are expected to be $1,211,948, which is roughly a 1 percent increase over last year.

The new budget includes no significant capital expenditures.

The superintendent’s salary will jump 4 percent in the new budget. The pay for the top position is $78,957 for a four-day workweek. The salary does not include benefits, such as health insurance.

SAD 8 has only one other administrator, which is the Vinalhaven School principal. The pay for that post will rise 5 percent, bringing the full-time salary without benefits to $45,150. The school has 214 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Support staff will receive pay raises ranging from 2 percent to 4 percent in the approved budget, but teachers have not yet settled a new contract, Warren said.
