Fight at Bar Harbor ball field leads to 3 arrests, 1 assault charge

BAR HARBOR – An afternoon at the town ball field began peacefully Wednesday but ended in a fight and three arrests, according to police.

Samuel Harris, 19, and Brian Jordan, 19, both of Trenton, had driven to the ball field and were sitting in their car at about 3:45 p.m., allegedly drinking vodka and cranberry juice. The two were engaged in a friendly conversation with Chad Leavitt, 22, of Surry and his 16-year-old female companion from Ellsworth, whom they did not previously know, officers said.

But the chit-chat turned darker when one of the young men from Trenton spilled a drink on Leavitt and his friend.

“After the drink spilled, the juvenile female got out of the vehicle and proceeded to push Samuel Harris away from the car,” Sgt. Dave Kerns of the Bar Harbor Police Department said. “Eventually it turned into a fight where she was striking him.”

Witnesses said Harris did not strike back, Kerns said. Leavitt then got out of his car and joined in the fight. No serious injuries were reported, according to the police.

Several people had made emergency-911 calls to the police department, but the fight was all over by the time they arrived on the scene.

Officers arrested Harris, who had tried to drive away from the ball field but backed into a telephone pole, and charged him with operating while under the influence and possession of alcohol by a minor. Leavitt was arrested for violating previous bail conditions and was taken to Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth. His juvenile companion was arrested and charged with assault. She and Harris were bailed directly from the police station, Kerns said.
