Perhaps you should head to Greenville if you’re a real fan of yard sales because Diane Bartley reports that the community is hosting a townwide yard sale Saturday, May 20.

The idea came from a Greenville Housing Corp. board meeting, Bartley explained, when residents of the nonprofit complex were considering a fundraiser to help “pretty up” around the facility.

From those origins, the event has grown to include more than 50 families and civic groups selling their previously used treasures.

Bartley describes the event as “a combination scavenger hunt and yard sale” because “part of the fun is driving around looking for the pink yard sale signs.”

Some area restaurants and specialty shops offer yard sale specials, and Bartley suggests checking out the yard sale at Greenville Housing’s Pritham Park, where you will find a bake sale in progress.

St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church is hosting a yard sale, 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the church on the corner of North Main and Holyoke streets in Brewer.

Lisa Chambers reports proceeds benefit its outreach programs such as “Prayer Shawls, which are knit for those in physical and emotional need; our local food cupboard; Totally Social, a monthly activities for learning-disabled adults,” and the school in Haiti that the church helps support.

You will find furniture, an air conditioner, new Avon jewelry, books, toys and more.

St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church also will host the Brewer Christian Food Cupboard Perennial Sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 20, at the church.

Jan Ashton reports that Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association certified growers Peter and Julie Beckford of Sweet Pea Perennials in Clifton will provide the plants.

“Because they are field grown plants,” Ashton wrote, “they are hardy to this zone and do extremely well. Prices are very good, and a percentage of sales will directly benefit the food cupboard,” which assists more than 80 families a month in Brewer, Clifton, Dedham, Eddington, Holden and Orrington.

It is open 10 a.m.-noon Wednesdays and Fridays, at the church, 21 Holyoke St., Brewer.

WLBZ-TV sports anchor John Smist, honorary chairman of the ninth annual Great Bangor Rubber Duck Race, will start it at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, on Central Street Bridge in Bangor.

The 2,000 rubber ducks will float to the finish line at the footbridge behind Pickering Square parking garage.

Sponsors of winning ducks will receive prizes.

Tickets are $5 for one duck or $25 for six, and will be sold by Good Samaritan Agency volunteers between 8 and 10 a.m. that day in Pickering Square, where you also will find children’s games and face painting.

Sally Bates of Bangor hopes you’ll head downtown for Cool Cats Saturday on May 20.

Everything from activities for the kids to free shuttle rides, live music and entertainment will be at your disposal, as well as cat-related sales at downtown shops.

The evening closes with the Hair Ball from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Sea Dog Conference Center. Tickets are $10 a person and $15 for couples, and will be available at the door.

Proceeds benefit the Bangor Humane Society.

Trudy Tremblay invites you to the 50th annual Green Thumb Plant and Food Sale, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Church of Universal Fellowship, 82 Main Street in Orono.

Annuals, perennials, small trees, berry bushes, lilacs and other plantings donated by people thinning their gardens will be available.

The food sale features a meal for two, bean supper in a basket, along with homemade breads, desserts and preserves.

The Children’s Miracle Network third annual Plunge into Pushaw Lake begins with registration at 11 a.m. and the plunge at noon Sunday, May 21, at Lakeside Landing.

Individual and costume prizes will be awarded, and sponsors are welcome.
