HARWICH, Mass. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies stayed alive in the NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional by posting a 6-3 victory over Western New England College late Friday night.
USM had posted a 12-10 win over Middlebury (Vt.) College earlier Friday night.
The Huskies advanced to Friday’s play with a 10-1 victory over St. Joseph’s College of Standish on Thursday night.
USM’s wins eliminated Middlebury, WNEC, and St. Joseph’s.
The Huskies will have to win two from top seed and tourney unbeaten Wheaton (Mass.) beginning at noon today.
Early Friday night, Eddie Skeffington broke an 8-8 tie with a two-run triple in the eighth inning and he scored on an ensuing throwing error as the Huskies rallied for the triumph.
Middlebury had led 8-5, but Ryan Bourque belted a three-run homer in the sixth to tie it.
Skeffington finished with three hits and four runs batted in, Bourque had two hits and also drove in four, and Chris Burleson had two doubles and a single and knocked in two.
Joe Ganley and Max Arsenault had two hits apiece.
John Lanahan and Alex Casnocha combined for seven hits and five RBIs for Middlebury. Casnocha had a homer and a double and Lanahan had a double among their hits. Ryan Armstrong tripled and doubled, and Joe Ramoin doubled and singled.
On Thursday night, freshman righty Burleson fired a seven-hitter, striking out a season-high 13 and walking two, and he aided his own cause with a two-run homer.
