MDI girls, Bucksport boys victors Hutchins wins 4 events for Trojans; Bucks use depth to pile up points

ELLSWORTH – Early in Friday night’s Hancock County Track and Field Championships, Del Luce Stadium resembled a scene from an Edgar Allen Poe short story, with gusty winds, driving rain, and dark, cloudy skies looming overhead.

The Mount Desert Island girls and Bucksport boys, both of whom will be legitimate contenders in next week’s Penobscot Valley Conference meets, weathered the wet and gusty conditions very well en route to team titles.

The Trojans piled up 285 points to second-place Bucksport’s 66. Searsport took third with 44, followed by host Ellsworth with 27 and George Stevens of Blue Hill with 26, and Sumner of East Sullivan’s 7 rounded out the six-team field.

The well-rounded Bucksport boys team fended off a challenge from MDI to win with 162 points. The Trojans were second with 141, followed by Ellsworth’s 106, GSA’s 34, and Sumner’s 7.

Coincidentally, Bucksport and MDI are the host schools for next week’s respective PVC championships.

In the boys meet, the Bucks have always had strong hurdlers, and this year is no different. Tom Belton took the 300 hurdles and was third in the 110 hurdles while teammate Alan Pomeroy was first in the 110 race and third in the 300.

Coach Chris Jones said, however, that Bucksport’s strengths are all over the track and field.

“Our strength has really been the sprinters, and we’re really well-rounded,” he said. “I’ve been telling the kids this year is we have depth in almost every event, and if you’re gonna win, that’s important.”

With one week left before PVCs, Jones said that his team needed one last step before that big meet.

“This was a good meet for us to test our mentality and see where we stand against some of the better runners,” he said.

Nate Warren took both the 100 and 200 dashes while Deven Eaton won the shot put and Adam Kapaldo the long jump.

Ellsworth distance runner Corey DeWitt ran a couple of 800s and 400s, leading the Eagles’ 4×800 and 4×400 teams to wins and taking the 400 in 54.66 seconds and 800 in 2 minutes, 0.57 seconds.

In the girls meet, the tough Trojans were able to spread out their points well despite missing senior distance runner Emily Farley, who is on a trip to the United Nations in New York City with her Model United Nations class, coach Ian Braun said.

Right off the bat, Braun reminded his team that they weren’t going to be the only ones competing in the rough weather conditions.

“I told the kids when they got off the bus no whining, we’ll just go at it, and everyone’s competing in the same conditions,” he explained. “You’ve just got to gut it out and get places.”

Freshman sprinting sensation Danielle Hutchins won four events, the 100 (13.09 seconds), 400 (1:03.88), 200 (27.60), and long jump (15 feet, 3.25 inches).

One of Braun’s more consistent sprinters this season has been senior Aimee Brooks. She ran to second in the 400 (1:04.93) and third in the 200 (29.60) and anchored MDI’s winning 4×400 relay team.

“She’s been consistent for a while,” Braun said. “Her and Sarah March, they’ve been our leaders for quite a while; they make this thing go, along with Emily Farley.”

March led off MDI’s 4×400, which also included Susan Falt and Sidney Cough. She took fourth in the 200 in 30.80 and fifth in the 100 in 14.31, and anchored the winning 4×100 team, which included Mercedes Frazier, Mariah Grover, and Katy Klaver.

Shauna Lynch of George Stevens took both the 1600 and 3200 in 5:28.43 and 11:59.00, respectively.

Due to the wet and windy weather conditions, the javelin, high jump, and pole vault were not contested.
