Shead High School
EASTPORT – Terry B. Lux, principal of Shead High School in Eastport, has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2006.
Helen Pottle, daughter of Thomas and Joyce Pottle of Perry, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2006. She will attend Bates College in Lewiston to study environmental science.
She has been Downeast Athletic Conference cross country champion for her four years of high school, Eastern Maine Class D cross country champion for three years, and the 2003 State Class D cross country champion. She participates in race-walking, was a 2004 All-American, as well as the Outdoor Track State of Maine Class C One-Mile race-walk runner-up in 2004 and 2005, and has been a member of the basketball team for four years.
Pottle is vice president of the National Honor Society, senior section editor of the yearbook, and a member of the math team. She volunteers for her church, as well as with the Perry Elementary School basketball program and community recycling, and tutors math at Eastport Elementary School. She is serving a senior-year internship at the Cobscook Bay Resource Center and is employed seasonally at the Polar Treat in Perry.
Loretta Biss, daughter of Greg Biss and Barbara Smith of Eastport, has been named salutatorian for the Class of 2006. She plans to attend Bates College in Lewiston or Colby College in Waterville to study liberal arts.
She is Shead’s recipient of the 2006 Maine Principals’ Award, has served as vice-president of her class for three years, secretary of the National Honor Society, a member of the drama club and the yearbook staff. She volunteers with the Big Brothers-Big Sisters program, and has been a member of the basketball, softball, cross country and tennis teams.
First Honor Part is Jessie Daniels, son of Melanie and Michael Cummings of Eastport and Thomas Daniels of Bangor. He will attend the University of Maine in Orono to study business administration.
He has served as class secretary, yearbook business manager, math peer tutor, treasurer of the National Honor Society, and member of the recycling committee. He works part time at the IGA in Eastport.
Second Honor Part is Ashley Murphy, daughter of Kenny and Elaine Murphy of Eastport. She will attend the University of Maine at Machias to study education.
She is a four-year member of the basketball and softball teams, and managed the boys soccer team for two years. She spent a year as class vice president and one as president, and was a two-year member of Shead’s student senate, for which she has served as secretary and president. She is editor-in-chief of the yearbook and a member of the National Honor Society and the drama club.
Third Honor Part is Taunya Cook, daughter of Ricky and Lucy Cook of Eastport. She will attend the University of Maine in Orono to study business management.
She is a four-year member of the basketball and tennis teams and a three-year member of the softball team. She is president of the National Honor Society and senior section editor of the yearbook, and she served as class treasurer for two years. She participated in the Skills USA Competition in commercial baking, and is treasurer of the Skills USA team. She volunteers with Big Brothers-Big Sisters and the recycling committee.
