Women’s hockey team loses 4 players

Four University of Maine women’s ice hockey players have decided to leave school.

Defenseman Julie Poulin, left wing-center Danielle Tangredi, C-RW Sheri Wauters, and left wing Patricia Gagnon won’t return in the fall.

Poulin, Tangredi, and Wauters were sophomores and Gagnon was a freshman.

Poulin, who was tied for second on the team in points with 25 (7 goals, 18 assists) and averaged 25 minutes of ice time per game, was an All-Hockey East honorable mention. Gagnon was chosen to the Hockey East All-Rookie team despite playing only half a season. Gagnon finished with eight goals and eight assists in 14 games.

Wauters had 5 & 7 in 32 games, and Tangredi wound up with 4 & 6 in 27 games.

Maine coach Guy Perron said Poulin has transferred to Boston University, Tangredi has moved on to Providence College, and Wauters and Gagnon have returned home. Wauters is from Kamloops, British Columbia, and Gagnon hails from Mont-Joli, Quebec. All four were scholarship players.

“There’s no question we’re going to miss them. They were great players and great people,” said Perron. “But we have some great recruits coming in. We’ve brought in a lot of good, skilled players. We should be a lot faster next year. We feel the program is on the right track.”

They have brought in five forwards and a defenseman, and he added that they are still looking to recruit a defenseman and a forward.

Perron said Tangredi was dissatisfied with her ice time, Gagnon was homesick, Wauters didn’t foresee much playing time in the future, and Poulin had “differences of opinion” with him.

He said he told Poulin “it was best to go our separate ways. There were too many differences between the parties involved.”

The Bears will return four of their top five scorers in C Brigitte Laflamme (14 & 17), All-Hockey East first team defenseman Kelly Law (7 & 18), LW Vanessa Vani (11 & 13), and RW Sonia Corriveau (12 & 11).

Law heads up a list of four returning defensemen who played in at least 30 games last season, and Perron will also have all three goalies back.

Maine went 17-9-6 this past season and lost to Frozen Four semifinalist New Hampshire 6-0 in the Hockey East semifinals.
