Bangor High School
Graduation for the Class of 2006 will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at the Bangor Auditorium.
Each year, Bangor High School awards the top four students in the graduating senior class the Charles E. French Medals. This year’s recipients are Ingrid Alquist, Amanda McGinn, Katherine Nadeau and Austin Smith.
Ingrid Elizabeth Alquist, daughter of Larry and Patti Alquist of Bangor, will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick to study math, economics and Spanish.
Alquist was the treasurer of the class council and chairwoman of the senior banquet. She placed 23rd of 1,924 participants statewide in the math team and participated in field hockey, National Honor Society, student council, Key Club and Sidekicks. She also was treasurer of the Queen City Club.
Alquist received the Spanish Departmental Award, the Williams College Book Award, the Superintendent’s Award and the title of AP Scholar with Honors.
Amanda Sue McGinn, daughter of John and Angela McGinn of Bangor, will attend Amherst College in Massachusetts to study law and economics.
She was an active member in Key Club, National Honor Society and math team. She participated on the indoor and outdoor track teams, serving as an outdoor captain this year and an indoor captain her junior and senior years. She received first place at the eastern Maine championship meet for the 100-meter hurdles both her sophomore and junior years.
McGinn received academic awards including department awards in English and French and the Superintendent’s Award. She has been employed by the Bangor Mall Dairy Queen and has been involved with the Children’s Miracle Network by volunteering and planning events.
Katherine Lynn Nadeau, daughter of Stephen and Deborah Nadeau of Glenburn, will attend the University of Maine to study biology.
She has served two years as an editor of the school yearbook, The Oracle, is the current vice president of the National Honor Society and has been involved in the school newspaper and SEED, an environmental activist club.
Nadeau was one of the top 50 scorers on last year’s MEAs and received numerous academic awards including the MPA Principal’s Award, the Superintendent’s Award, the Holy Cross Book Prize and department awards in foreign language and history.
Austin Crowley Smith, son of Larry and Janie Smith of Bangor, will attend Bentley College in Massachusetts to study business.
He participated as a scoring member of the math team all four years of high school and was an active member of the National Honor Society. In addition to being named second-team all-conference in soccer, he was captain of both the soccer and tennis teams his senior year. He received the Phi Beta Kappa Award as a junior and the Superintendent’s Award this spring.
