Vandalism incident results in two arrests

Two local men racked up charges Saturday night after a window-smashing incident on First Street.

Darren Seidell, 24, a transient whose last known address was in Milford, was charged with criminal mischief and violating a condition of his release on bail on a charge of stealing vodka from a local Hannaford supermarket.

Facing the same charges, Jeff Doucette, 23, of Bangor was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Sunday night. Earlier that day, he had been charged with the theft of gasoline from a Bangor filling station.

The two were together when the vodka and gas thefts occurred, according to police reports by Bangor police Officer James Dearing.

About 5:15 p.m., residents reported that two men were damaging a vehicle in a driveway near 100 First St. and that glass fragments were hitting the side of the building, according to Dearing.

Upon his arrival, Dearing found an Oldsmobile Cutlass with all of its windows smashed in or damaged by rocks.

Police said witnesses recognized the two men who allegedly destroyed the vehicle and provided authorities with the license plate number of a red Pontiac Grand Am the two drove off in, with Doucette at the wheel. The vehicle’s owner could not be located over the weekend.

About 45 minutes later, Dearing spotted the car at Main and Broad streets and pulled it over near Main and Union streets.

Doucette at first denied involvement in vandalizing the vehicle, but after he was confronted by witnesses’ statements, he said he gave Seidell a ride after seeing him break the windows.

Doucette also denied consuming alcohol, but then admitted to drinking vodka earlier in the day. He was given a breath test but the results were below the legal limit. He was out on bail, however, and among the conditions of his release was that he not use or possess alcohol.

Seidell denied breaking the windows even after Dearing told him Doucette’s version of events.

The two were ordered not to have contact with each other and to stay away from 100 First St.
