Wheaton thumps USM to win N.E. regional

HARWICH, Mass. – Scott Guillerault went 4-for-4 with a single, double, and two-run home run to drive in six runs as Wheaton College downed the University of Southern Maine 16-5 Saturday to claim the NCAA Division III New England Regional title.

Southern Maine defeated Western New England College 6-3 on Friday to advance to the championship round, but needed to defeat Wheaton twice without losing to win the title.

In the championship game, Wheaton pounded out 17 hits with three home runs to earn its first trip to the Division III World Series. Adam Laplante hit a two-run homer and Pat O’Connor added a solo shot, each in the third inning, to break the game open.

Chris Burleson hit a home run and a single with three RBIs for the Huskies, and Ryan Bourque added three singles and drove in two runs.

In its earlier game, Adam Ross scattered four hits and two walks over seven innings to lead Southern Maine over Western New England.

Nick Vardaro and Max Aresenault singled twice and Brent Lemieux added a double.
