Adam Craig finishes strong in Belgium race

SPA FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium – Adam Craig of Corinth and Bend, Ore., finished as the second-fastest American on Sunday at the International Cycling Union’s World Cup mountain biking cross country circuit’s third stop of the season.

Craig, 24, was timed in 2 hours, 27 minutes, 37 seconds to finish 35th overall among 203 finishers. Olympian Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski of Boulder, Colo., was the top finishing American, placing 16th in 2:23:20.

Reigning Olympic mountain biking champion Julien Absalon won his second race in as many weeks, finishing with a time of 2:14:53 to edge second-place Jose Antonio Hermida Ramos of Spain (2:15:20). Absalon had won the World Cup stop in Madrid, Spain, a week earlier.

With the win, Absalon maintained a healthy lead in the overall World Cup standings, with 700 points compared to 475 for second-place Bart Brantjens of the Netherlands. Horgan-Kobelski is 18th in the standings with 170 points, while Craig is 25th with 127 points.

The World Cup tour wraps up its three-week European swing next weekend at Fort William, Great Britain.
